Delighted to have received another 5* Google Review from a happy candidate - it makes all the hard work worthwhile

Absolutely fantastic service from start to finish! Helen was a joy to deal with. She landed me with a great job which was exactly what I was looking for (which I found extremely difficult to find)! I am so happy and hugely grateful for Helen as I certainly wouldn’t be in this position without her!

30 October 2019 : Women in Technical Roles?

Very interesting statistics and information within this article. What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Do you feel your organisation could be engaging more women within engineering and technical roles?

“In 2016, Engineering UK declared that the engineering industry was in a crisis period and was losing workers at a troubling rate and would soon be facing a major skills shortage in the UK. This severe recruitment crisis is seeing an estimated 69,000 to 186,000 engineering workers leaving each year to be replaced with only 46,000 engineering students and apprenticeships. This issue is being compounded by the weakened EU labour force thanks to the uncertainty around Brexit and the improving economic conditions and wages across Eastern Europe, causing many EU migrants to return home for work. Clearly, this skill shortage crisis needs addressing and the UK needs to be increasing its talent pool”.

30 May 2019 : UK engineering facing immigration rules 'threat'

Please take a look at this article regarding immigration rules that could be threatening the UK's already extensive skills shortages in the engineering sector.

22 May 2019 : The Royal Academy of Engineering

Interesting article here from the Royal Academy of Engineering

An opinion poll commissioned by the Royal Academy of Engineering indicates that a high proportion (88%) of the British public are proud of the UK’s engineering achievements and two thirds of those aware of these achievements believe that the UK will develop the next breakthrough technology. The vast majority (90%) also said they believe that engineering is important to the UK economy.

However, the poll also indicated that many people are unaware that some of the world’s most significant engineering breakthroughs have been made by British engineers. Out of a list of ground-breaking innovations, only the steam engine was correctly identified by a large majority (82%) as having been developed in the UK.

Just 52 per cent knew that the World Wide Web was created by a British engineer – Sir Tim Berners Lee OM KBE FREng FRS – while less than half (49%) were aware that the first jet engine was invented in the UK by Sir Frank Whittle OM KBE CB FREng FRS.

Even fewer (45%) knew that the colour television was a British invention, while just one fifth (19%) knew that the world’s first bionic hand was developed in the UK.

The findings, based on a nationwide survey of 2,000 people, come as the Royal Academy of Engineering prepares to announce the finalists for its prestigious MacRobert Award, the pre-eminent prize for UK engineering innovation, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

UK computing pioneers were also largely unknown to the public. Just a third of those polled (35%) had heard of Ada Lovelace, inventor of the computer algorithm, while Tommy Flowers, responsible for the world’s first programmable computer, was recognised by less than a fifth (12%).

Dr Dame Sue Ion DBE FREng FRS, Chair of the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award Judging Panel, said:

“The UK has a rich engineering heritage and this poll suggests that people want to hear more about modern engineering developments. It is very encouraging to see that the public is positive about what the future holds for UK engineering and its importance to our economy. Celebrating current engineering excellence is crucial if the sector is to receive the support it needs and to inspire the next generation of engineers.

“For the last 50 years the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award has celebrated ground-breaking engineering innovations that have established the UK as a global leader. Leading the judges for the MacRobert Award over the past five years I have been privileged to see at first hand the engineering behind products that are changing our lives for the better. The incredible work being undertaken around the country right now will help to generate jobs and growth in the future.”

The shortlist for the 2019 MacRobert Award will be revealed in June, with the winner announced on 11th July. Last year Cambridge-based Owlstone Medical won the award for its ground-breaking ReCIVA Breath Sampler, which can detect signs of cancer and other diseases at an early stage.

The joint first winners in 1969 were Rolls-Royce for the Pegasus engine that powered the Harrier jump jet, the world’s first vertical take-off and landing aircraft, and Freeman, Fox and Partners for the innovative deck design of the Severn Bridge.

Notes for editors

  1. YouGov poll

YouGov surveyed 2,000 UK adults during April 2019 to find out about their knowledge of the UK's engineering heritage, and whether they are positive about the UK's future as an engineering power. The research was conducted online.

  1. MacRobert Award for engineering innovation

First presented in 1969, the MacRobert Award is widely regarded as the most coveted in the industry, honouring the winning organisation with a gold medal and the team members with a cash prize of £50,000. Founded by the MacRobert Trust, the award is presented and run by the Royal Academy of Engineering, with support from the Worshipful Company of Engineers.

  1. Royal Academy of Engineering

As the UK’s national academy for engineering and technology, we bring together the most successful and talented engineers from academia and business – our Fellows – to advance and promote excellence in engineering for the benefit of society.

We harness their experience and expertise to provide independent advice to government, to deliver programmes that help exceptional engineering researchers and innovators realise their potential, to engage the public with engineering and to provide leadership for the profession.

We have three strategic priorities:

  • Make the UK the leading nation for engineering innovation and businesses
  • Address the engineering skills and diversity challenge
  • Position engineering at the heart of society

We bring together engineers, policy makers, entrepreneurs, business leaders, academics, educators and the public in pursuit of these goals.

Engineering is a global profession, so we work with partners across the world to advance engineering’s contribution to society on an international, as well as a national scale.

05 September 2018 : Make your C.V Stand Out

Make yourself stand out with a well written C.V.

Some tips here for when you are trying to find a new job. More and more candidates are sending half-hearted CV's that are not up to date. Follow these steps to help your application be noticed and not disregarded.

1) The CV needs to be fully up to date.
2) The CV needs dates when you started and when you finished along with job titles and then duties/responsibilities. Do this in bullet points explaining any machines worked on, materials used, systems followed etc.
3) Any gaps in dates need to be explained. i.e. unemployed and searching for work, took time out of work to spend with family, caring for family member or travelling and these also needs to have dates against them. The CV must be a timeline of your working life and it must flow.
4) You need to have a profile explaining about you, your skills, experience and what you want with regards to work. What you can offer an employer and what they can get from employing you.
5) You must also have a bit about yourself, so it explains your personality, your passions out of work etc.
6) It also needs to have education and any additional certificates and training you have undertaken.
7) Keep it simple and to the point, no fancy pictures etc.
8) This is YOUR opportunity to sell YOURSELF and land you that perfect new job. You need to put some time and attention into your c.v., so it can then work for you.
9) Sending CV’s that aren’t fully updated does not show a keen desire to secure a new role and if not fully filled in are often simply disregarded for candidates who's send in full CV's that have had time and attention spent on them.
10) It really doesn't take that long to do and is so important that this sells you in a positive light.

06 April 2018 : Weekly Round Up

Well it's been a tough old week this week for one reason or another.

One of the biggest challenges is chasing feedback from clients off the back of interviews along with obtaining feedback from CV's. I'm blaming the Easter Break though as many people are off work with the kids, so lots of contacts are out of office, or contacts are having to join forces to cover for people that are on annual leave. If you are one of the candidate’s patiently waiting, I’m sorry and I am chasing up for you.

I'm hoping next week is more positive and lots of lovely feedback comes in that I can relay back to candidates. Watch this space.

I have arranged several interviews for a new client for next week along with picking up or 5 jobs again for new companies so all in all a very good week on that front.

Another busy week planned for next week mainly resourcing for all active roles along with a visit to the MACH 2018 Exhibition in Birmingham #mach2018. If you are heading there and would like to meet up I'd love to hear from you.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Helen

05 April 2018 : CV's

The sheer volume of candidates seeking new opportunities and applying for jobs with out of date CV's is getting ridiculous.

I would say more people apply for jobs with out of date CV's than up to date ones.

A CV is the 1st and only opportunity to sell yourself to the client and to the specific job of interest.

It MUST be up to date with any blank dates explained.

Even if the recent job(s) are not relevant to the desired one it should still be in the CV so the CV flows and shows the timeline of employment.

All the duties and responsibilities need to be on there and candidates shouldn't be afraid to sell themselves. It's their opportunity to shine. Why should the client employ them!

If candidates cannot take the time to update their CV it doesn't showcase them as serious in the want to find new employment opportunities.

They need to spend some time updating prior to heading out into the marketplace.

03 April 2018 : Fresh Month

I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break?

I for sure am feeling extremely positive and focused after the break. It's the start of a fresh new month and we are now heading into Spring (hopefully we've had the last of the snow!).

I think the start of a new month gives you the opportunity to realign your goals, set some new ones and start as you mean to go on.

I am determined this month to get moving more and eat better after the Easter eggs. What’s your goals?

I am looking forward to attending the Mach Exhibition this month where I will meet up with clients new and old.  It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the wondering world of engineering.

Lots of active jobs at the moment all can be found under the vacancy page plus aiming to get many more and place lots of lovely candidates too.

Here's to a record breaking April for us all.

Please feel free to get in touch with your recruitment requirements and questions.

23 March 2018 : Permanent V's Temp-Perm

Why are some organisations still adamant on Temp to Perm contracts when we have stats like this?

“We have the lowest unemployment rate since 2005, and people already in work are becoming more hesitant about moving jobs amid Brexit uncertainty,” said the group’s chief executive, Kevin Green (REC), indicating that there is a smaller domestic pool of potential employees from which companies can find workers.

The shortage is most intense in the engineering sector which has warned for years that too few trainees are coming through the education system.

Even though the facts are there I am still getting the odd organisation adamant they will only offer they old school temp to perm contract for candidates.

Permanent recruitment, i.e. the candidate being on the client’s books from the start gives the candidate a permanent contract with the employer rather than weekly pay through an agency.

In my experience I think the words temp to perm puts people off. I wouldn’t leave a permanent job for a temp to perm job, would you?  But why do some organisations expect candidates to do this when they have families, mortgages and life commitments.

Permanent recruitment provides candidates with confidence from the start and works far better for all of the clients and candidate’s I work with.

Organisations sometimes say, how do I know they will fit in and be right for the role? It is always a risk but ensuring a thorough recruitment process is carried out along with work based competency tests can help this. Offering permanent contract also still gives clients the chance to get to know the candiate and how they will fit in to the business as there is the agency refund and rebate scheme along with the organisations own probationary period. All of this added with employment law terms can give organisations up to 2 years to release a candidate from their business. Why wouldn't a business want to believe in their own recruitment process and in the candiate from the outset?

Working in and industry with huge skill shortage, businesses need to be competing and attracting the best talent away from some of the bigger employers out there and I feel offering permanent contracts from the start works best.

I feel that if businesses want to find the best candidates that are committed and focussed to working with them for the long term they need to be working this way.

What do you think?

Best regards
